Educational/Goverment, department of Informatics at the second largest university in Sweden (aprox 30000 students at the university, 800 at our department).

Our main business use of Linux is as a web-server platform, which works greats. Many of our courses have started to use Linux as a computer lab enviroment.

We use it as File/mail/print-server to a minor extent today, but it is under evaluation if we should migrate more of our main server park to linux.



Deptartment of Informatics / Göteborgs University uses Linux for the following functions:

  • Internet or WAN router.
  • NIS server.
• Electronic mail server:
  • POP-3 server.
  • IMAP server.
  • SMTP server (sendmail, others).
  • SMTP mail router.
• Network services provided to local users:
  • HTTP (World-Wide Web) server or cache.
  • ``Regular'' (user-ID and password required) ftp server.
  • News server or cache.
  • Accepts telnet connections.
  • Accepts secure-shell (ssh) connections.
  • Services finger requests.
  • Other services.
• Software development tools:
  • C and/or C++
  • Java
  • Perl
