We are the office of the U.S. Senate Democratic Leader. Our office coordinates and makes available information, and offers specialized Information Technology services to Democratic Senators and to the Senate as a whole.



U.S. Senate Democratic Leadership uses Linux for the following functions:

• X-Windows:
  • X-Windows server (runs applications, possibly exports display)
• Network file server:
  • Samba server for a network of PCs.
  • File server for other types of clients.
• Internet client software - WWW
  • NetScape Navigator.
  • NCSA Mosaic.
  • Lynx.
• Internet client software - mail
  • Elm.
• Network management:
  • Internet or WAN firewall.
• Network services provided to local users:
  • HTTP (World-Wide Web) server or cache.
  • ``Regular'' (user-ID and password required) ftp server.
  • Anonymous ftp server.
  • Accepts telnet connections.
• Software development tools:
  • C and/or C++
  • Java
  • Bourne, Korn, C or another shell; using sed, awk, grep and similar tools.
