Hitachi ID has developed a distributed, secure database system for the Alberta Mental Health Board, with a Linux server at its core.
Windows-95 and Windows-NT clients communicate with the server over TCP/IP, using SSLeay for encryption, and a custom DBMS protocol for brevity and low latency. We wrote a server program that incorporates SSL communiation with the client, a CodeBase DBMS engine, our own access control code, our own server-based reporting engine, as well as an interface to POP3 and sendmail daemons on the server.
This system is used to securely share clinical information about mental health clients among authorized clinicians, in as close to real time as possible with human data entry.
