LINUX-BIZ: Free Computers for Education
UK Registered Charity providing refurbished computers to
schools, community organisations, the elderly or disabled to ``bridge the
digital divide.'' PC Systems are donated by many large and small companies
and are fully tested and refurbished prior to delivery.
Free Computers for Education uses Linux for the following functions:
- X-Windows:
- X-Windows terminal (display, keyboard, mouse -- applications run elsewhere)
- Network file server:
- File server for other types of clients.
- Print server:
- Print spooler using lpd (Unix, NFS clients)
- Modem communications:
- Users can dial-out using a (possibly shared) shared modem.
- Office productivity software:
- Document preparation with Star Office.
- HTTP servers
- Internet client software - WWW
- Internet client software - mail
- Electronic mail server:
- Network services provided to local users:
- HTTP (World-Wide Web) server or cache.
