Development, support, networking: We deploy Linux servers for companies requiring web access, email, web hosting, firewalls and a variety of other services. We also upgrade companies from other brands of Unix to Linux. Some development examples are online web quoting systems, online web database access, online web email clients, per user traffic accounting. One of our large international clients is the Nandos fast-food chain - for which we are deploying a Linux server at every outlet. We are also avid supportors of free software and aim to make our source code freely available.



Obsidian Systems CC uses Linux for the following functions:

• X-Windows:
  • X-Windows terminal (display, keyboard, mouse -- applications run elsewhere)
  • X-Windows server (runs applications, possibly exports display)
• Network file server:
  • Samba server for a network of PCs.
  • NFS server for other PCs and Unix systems.
  • File server for other types of clients.
• Print server:
  • Print spooler using lpd (Unix, NFS clients)
  • Print spooler using samba (PC clients)
• Fax spooler:
  • Fax server for incoming fax transmissions.
  • Fax server for outgoing fax transmissions.
• Modem communications:
  • Server answers the phone, provides shell logins.
  • Server answers the phone, provides PPP, SLIP or term logins.
  • Users can dial-out using a (possibly shared) shared modem.
  • Users can initiate PPP connections to remote systems.
• Office productivity software:
  • Document preparation with LyX.
  • Document preparation with TeX, LaTeX and derivatives.
• Internet client software - WWW
  • NetScape Navigator.
  • Lynx.
• Internet client software - mail
  • Pine.
• Network management:
  • Internet or WAN router.
  • Internet or WAN firewall.
  • NIS server.
• Electronic mail server:
  • SMTP server (sendmail, others).
• Network services provided to local users:
  • HTTP (World-Wide Web) server or cache.
