Learn more about CAPTCHAs.

A CAPTCHA is some test, typically implemented in the user interface of a web application and often as a part of the authentication process of that application, to check whether the user attempting to sign into the application is, indeed, a human being.

CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. It is named in honour of Alan Turing, who famously proposed a test to discern humans from computers.
