Onboarding

In the context of identity and access management, onboarding refers to the creation of a new identity or a new account, associated with an existing identity. (It is possible to create a new account and not associate it with any identity, but this is generally considered a poor practice).

The term onboarding derives from the process of passengers boarding a vehicle such as an aircraft or ship. This term is often preferable to terms such as "hiring" since it encompasses different types of users -- employees, contractors, vendors, students, customers, partners, etc.

Hitachi ID Identity Manager can automate various onboarding processes, including those driven by a system of record or a request portal.
