LDIF is short for LDAP Data Interchange Format. It is a file format for text files that contain data exported from and/or suitable for import into an LDAP directory.

An excellent description of LDIF, including samples, is provided on Wikipedia.

In Active Directory environments, LDIF files can be extracted from and loaded into the directory using the free LDIFDE utility. In OpenLDAP environments, the equivalent utilities are ldapsearch (to extract data from the directory) and ldapadd (to inject data into the directory).
